Wildflowers In the Texas Hill Country

The Texas bluebonnets have faded and are going to seed; however, the country roads in the Texas Hill Country are a riot of colors with Indian blankets providing a great show of color right now. Also blooming are prairie larkspur, prairie verbena, Huisache daisy, spider wort, pink evening primrose, wild garlic, musk thistle, Texas star, Texas vervain, wine cup, yarrow, prickly pear cactus, yucca, . . . . and many more! Now is an excellent time to see wildflowers in the Texas Hill Country. This page is updated each week by 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Over 5,000 wildflower species make their home in the State of Texas, products of the state’s different ecosystems. The Texas Hill Country is defined by limestone cliffs, granite outcrops and hidden springs, providing diverse habitats for wildflowers. Favorite wildflowers found around Fredericksburg, located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, include bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, winecups, Indian blanket and lemonmint.

The main wildflower season around Fredericksburg typically runs from mid-March to mid-May, although certain wildflower species bloom throughout the summer and even into the fall if rainfall and other weather conditions are favorable. Watch this site for updates on blooming conditions.

Visitors to Fredericksburg will want to check out the wildflower fields and Market Center at the Wildseed Farms, Ltd., the largest working wildflower farm in the U.S. The operation is located approximately seven miles east of Fredericksburg on Highway 290, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country.
